Helena didn't understand what he muttered in Dutch. That was a language she didn't speak, but she wasn't going to ask for a translation. It was clearly something between him and Christina and no one else. Had he wished her to understand, he would have said it in English. As they returned to the carriage, Helena looked at him. The fact there were alternatives plural surprised.
"What else is an alternative other than death?" Because that one she was fairly certain was one of the alternatives. And so okay, the fact he seemed to not want to kill her was a good thing. Perhaps it meant he did truly feel something for her. Or perhaps it meant absolutely nothing other than he didn't want to kill her. For the moment, she would put her money on the fact he just didn't want to kill her. To expect anything else was no doubt going to set her up for more pain, and more pain was the very last thing she needed right now.
She climbed into the carriage again, and drew in a long breath. She glanced out the window towards Christina's grave on the off-chance it would be the last time she would see it.
